Day 2 - A Giveaway.

Do you ever have a grand idea that backfires? This happened to me last night, when I tried to make pain au chocolat.

I used the recipe from Vegan Brunch. I saw phyllo dough in the ingredients and thought, ok, that's a little strange, but I trust Isa. I made just 3 (they were huge!) and waited 15 minutes to try it.

Folks, that is phyllo wrapped chocolate. Not the buttery, warm, delicious pocket of dark chocolate I remembered. This week, a real pain au chocolat will happen, and it won't be made of sadness.

While I get over my disappointment, I thought I'd have a giveaway. I have 3 So Delicious coupon booklets, 3 coupons for a free Earth Balance Mindful Mayo spread and 3 coupons for a free Earth Balance Coconut Spread. I've tried both the Mayo and the Spread and they are delicious! And coconut milk, c'mon.

Tell me your latest letdown and I'll choose a winner on Wednesday! This is open worldwide, providing that the cost of mailing a letter isn't too terribly expensive (I am broke, dudes).

ps, if you don't win this time, I will be having giveaways each week of this stuff!

Latest let down so far had to be a Carrot Ginger Dressing which tasted mostly like cooked carrot and very little like anything else.

It currently lives in my freezer waiting for the day I figure out what I can do with it (because I wound up with 1 litre of it).

Latest let down would be the veggie pot pie that I made from the Vegetarian Family Cookbook. I guess the author's idea of a medium sized potato is very different than mine because it ended up being more like a mashed potato pie with veggies...I don't know about you but I enjoy my pot pies to be creamy & rich, this pie was not. It was good but not what I was expecting and I should have known better than to put all those potatoes in when I thought it looked to be too much. hehehe, lesson learned!

Aww. Sorry about your pain au chocolat let down!

Let's see... I didn't have any soy flour to make the appropriate seitan recipe to go in the Seitan Brew Stew from American Vegan Kitchen the other day. So I decided to make the Viva Vegan steamed white seitan to use instead, because it's pretty quick and easy and I like it.

What I didn't think about going into this is that the steamed seitan turns out really soft-- most of the VV recipes it goes into call for it to be seared at some point so that it's crispy on the inside and still pretty tender on the outside.

I didn't sear it, I just threw it into the stew at the specified time... and it totally disintegrated. It basically became the size & shape of TVP granules.

It wasn't bad per se, but sure wasn't the big chewy chunks of seitan in stew I was hoping for...

Oh, I even have a picture! I made these sweet potato quinoa pancakes from Brendan Brazier's thrive and this happened - http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y132/ltlghiagrl/Blog/IMG_2800.jpg - and I never screw up pancakes, so it really wasn't my fault. Sad.

Oh, and a green smoothie with avocado in it - blech.

I got sick after making and eating Lemon Lentil Soup...don't know if the food was just a coincidence but I'm very let down. It was delicious but I am definitely not making it again anytime soon!

I recently followed a recipe for "fudgy" brownies that resulted in a pan of chocolate cake. :(

Thanks for the giveaway!

My last let down was user error (ahem..)

Lesson learned: When baking cupcakes with a friend, delegate exactly which ingredients each person will be putting in. Once you've had those cupcakes in the oven for an hour and a half (well over the allowed 20 minutes baking time), you might ask yourselves, "Who put the flour in?" Oi... In all fairness, they tasted ok, once we dug out the only dime-sized pieces not stuck to the wrappers!

latest culinary letdown?
i made mac n cheezie, but since i don't have a blender (yet) i used unsweetened almond milk instead.

it was pretty barfy.

i will never underestimate the goodness of cashews again.

that being said, i am eyeballing your coconut milk coupons.

oooooh! yes please!!

i made the chickpea gravy from appetite for reduction, and it made me very sad. it was grainy and dry and mot oily like a good gravy should be, but i understand it's purpose in a weight-lossy book. :-(

i never thought i'd ever dislike anything made with chickpeas, but alas.

I tried some vegan "steak" strips from Trader Joes that looked questionable but I haven't had many disappointments from TJ's so I decided to give a go. Total mistake. I ate a few of the slimy, tasteless blobs before throwing the whole thing out.

blech :(

I tried to make red velvet cake, using beets. I accidentally doubled the amount of beets. It wasn't pretty. And I like beets.

We have a bargain grocery store that sells items past their expiration date. As I was checking out, I quickly picked up some chocolate chip cookies without giving them much examination, and was excited to eat them. Mmm...vegan choco chip cookies. I got out to the car and saw they'd expired in July, opened them, and, they were fuzzy! Luckily, I hadn't left the parking lot, so I was able to exchange them for a non-fuzzy vegan rice krispy treat!

I made a mug brownie, but the only sugar I had was brown sugar, so it tasted gross :( When I need my chocolate, I need my chocolate. So that was a big letdown.

Gravy that was too sweet. Really not what I was expecting.

My latest letdown is probably the sweet basil spread from Veganomicon... way too sweet... and since I don't want to waste food, I then spread it on a pizza... and ruined my pizza!

Wildwood unsweetened probiotic soymilk is pretty much undrinkable on its own. I thought I was going to get a tangy, delicious, yogurty drink, but no. It's passable in smoothies, but that's not what I bought it for.

i don't need to enter this giveaway, but I just want to express my solidarity with your culinary let down. Sigh. I had one recently (coming up in a day or two on Mofo) and it was a total defeat. Happens to the best of us, I guess!

I thought Nayonaise was pretty terrible. But then again, I just don't like regular Miracle Whip.
